In the realm of erectile dysfunction treatments, what sets it apart is the drug’s active ingredient. This article examines Viagra, its uses, side effects, and how they compare to other ED treatments.
Viagra: An Overview
Viagra, also known by its generic name sildenafil, is a medication widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping to achieve and maintain an erection.
The drug’s active ingredient, sildenafil, is sildenafil citrate, a compound that enhances blood flow to the penis when sexual stimulation occurs. This enhanced blood flow helps men achieve and maintain erections during sexual activity.
Viagra is classified as a PDE5 inhibitor because it enhances blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This increased blood flow helps men achieve and maintain erections during sexual activity.
The Key Differences
Viagra, like other PDE5 inhibitors, operates through a different mechanism of action. When sexual stimulation occurs, the body releases nitric oxide, which activates an enzyme called guanylate cyclase. This leads to an increase in blood flow to the penis, causing the penis to become erect.
During sexual activity, the body makes a second messenger, which sends out an enzyme called PDE5. This enzyme breaks down the smooth muscle cells of the penis, allowing for an erection. This process can vary in terms of time- and dose-related, but Viagra typically starts to work within 30 to 60 minutes of ingestion.
The drug’s mechanism of action is similar to that of other PDE5 inhibitors, with sildenafil enhancing blood flow to the penis in the first place. PDE5 inhibitors do not work the same way, with the difference being their duration of action.
How Viagra Works
Viagra, or sildenafil citrate, works by enhancing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation.
Viagra works by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). This enzyme breaks down cGMP, a substance that relaxes the smooth muscles in the penis.
Viagra also inhibits an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE6) in the body. This enzyme breaks down cGMP, which relaxes the smooth muscles in the penis, thereby allowing for an erection.
The drug’s mechanism of action is similar to that of other PDE5 inhibitors. By inhibiting an enzyme called PDE6, it allows the enzyme PDE5 to be more active during sexual stimulation. This allows for greater blood flow to the penis, which helps men achieve and maintain erections during sexual activity.
The drug’s side effect profile also differs. Some of Viagra’s mild side effects include headache, flushing, and indigestion. Serious side effects, though rare, include sudden vision or hearing loss, an erection that doesn’t go away, and an itchy skin rash.
Considerations for Use
When considering Viagra’s use in treatment of erectile dysfunction, one important consideration is whether it’s safe or suitable for men with certain medical conditions. Men with certain medical conditions, such as liver or kidney problems, should discuss their options with their healthcare provider.
Other factors to consider include the drug’s effect on blood flow, the severity of the problem, and the patient’s overall health. Some men may experience mild side effects, such as headaches or flushing, while others may need to take the drug for a longer period of time.
Another consideration is whether the drug is effective for treating other problems beyond erectile dysfunction. For example, some studies show that Viagra can improve erectile function in up to 80% of men with reduced sexual desire. However, it’s important to consider Viagra’s potential side effects and the patient’s overall health to ensure its use is safe and appropriate for men with these conditions.
Another consideration is whether the treatment is suitable for a specific patient. For example, men with certain medical conditions, such as cardiovascular conditions or liver or kidney problems, may benefit from taking Viagra.

Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that developed Viagra (sildenafil), has (MHRA) to reclassify it’s erectile dysfunction (ED) drug from prescription-only to ‘P’ (Pharmacy). This would allow pharmacies to sell sildenafilover the counterwithout a prescription.
The application is forsildenafil 50mg onlyin a maximum margin of error of seven per cent across 14 pharmacies in the UK. There are no restrictions for people with a prescription, and the applications are accepted only if they’ve a well-controlled effect.
The move follows the in 2013, where Pfizer’s ownavanaf was lodged with the Health Service in an attempt to convince the company that it was unsuitable for aPharmacy. It was rejected after peer-reviewed associated studies suggested an interaction between Penegra and nitrates might be required, an assessment that was rejected six months later. A similar assessment in 2014 found ‘angina’ only restricted the use of Penegra and ‘narrowing of theio’ only for angina was also excluded.
It’s important to note thatPfizerdid not intend this move to be a reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is not clear from the reference list (NTS) whether there are alternative medicines in any medicine (e.g. Viagra) that Pfizer can offer people with erectile dysfunction (ED) the same medicines as they do for people without erectile dysfunction (ED).
The application for reclassification from Prescription Only to Pharmacy is being pursued at the discretion of the pharmacyramaceedancevenator, sildenafil’s new category of ‘P’ medicine.
The MHRA has consultation with pharmacy professionals to ensure the pharmacyramaceedingdecision is appropriate and that sildenafil is a suitable medicine (e.g. Viagra), and that people with erectile dysfunction (ED) find it effective.
